the cross

Confession at the foot of the cross

Among the Roman centurions who surrounded the occupation forces in Palestina at the time of Jesus, Matthew, Mark and Luke mention the one who supervised the crucifixion of Jesus and the brigands. Maybe it is him who let his soldiers cruelly make fun of Jesus, spit on him and hit his head. Surely, he does not assist his first crucifixion but this time he is amazed. First of all because of the noble behaviour of his victim who does not think for himself but who thinks for the others.

Then, at noon, the sun hides until he who is crucified as "the King of the Jews" cries out: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

Then, when the sun comes forth again Jesus dies with a great scream whereas the crucified normally die by suffocation and they don't have any air anymore to express themselves.

Finally, an earthquake shakes the rocks and fills them with terror who assist the scene. The centurion acknowledges in front of all: "He certainly was the Son of God"

The religious chiefs harden their hatred against Jesus until the end and they refuse to realize that he is the Son of God. On the contrary, this centurion who is far away from the Jewish religion and who is not blinded by the same feelings yields to the facts: his eyes are opened on the greatness of the Son of God who is made man.
