God cannot lie

an old Scottish woman

However, she was happy to think that soon she would leave her suffering body to enter into the presence of Jesus, her Lord. Her old worn Bible which had been flipped through many times and her glasses were on the table near her bed.

A young neighbour who wanted to become a pastor often visited her. He loved to listen to her in her imagined language, when she spoke about "her pot of flour and her oil jug" which were inexhaustable. This is how she named the Word of God which was the food of her soul. One day he asked her: "Tell me, Nancy, have you never been afraid that even though you have prayed so many times and expected the deliverance, that God will permit you to be lost for eternity?" The old lady with her sparkling eyes sat up straight on her bed indignantly: "My poor man! God would be the one who would have the biggest loss! If Nancy's soul is lost this would not be the worst thing! But God would loose all his honour and character. He made promises. If he would break his word he would become a liar and the whole world would fall into chaos."

These were some of her last words. However, the old Scottish lady did right in basing her trust in the promises of "God who cannot lie." (Titus 1, 2)
