25th March "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live." John 5, 24 & 25 Escape the next world It neither concerns the means of salvation which the rich man would have neglected and which Lazarus would have seized nor a retribution based on the wrong principle of the more we suffer on earth more we will deserve to enter heaven. Through this narrative the Lord shows us that nothing can change our situation after death: "There will be a big pit between the stay of the happy believers and the stay of the reprobates who will have refused God's salvation. Neither the prayers nor the offerings of the living can help the dead. The prayers of the dead cannot help the living either. After leaving the body the soul enters into eternity. |
The third truth is that the unbeliever will be conscient of the happiness of the believers. He will then measure his foolishness for refusing the salvation which God offered him. In other words, if purgatory is not based on the Bible, hell is a frightening reality which is often mentioned in the Bible.
All these truths challenge us. The everlasting lot of our soul is decided on earth: "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved." (Acts 16, 31)
