It is always good to be determined to do good things. Everybody will congratulate you. However, this is not the problem. It is not by turning the page and being determined to do better in future that the bad scholar's stains in his exercise book will be done away with because the teacher's eye will discover them and punish the scholar. Instead his efforts will disappoint him.

A commercial who is going bankrupt would not gain anything in avoiding to write on the transfer of the page: "owe" in his cashbook. The new figures on the white page will not pay the old debt. Unfortunately, each page of our life starts with a sad "transfer". Good resolutions and improvements lead us to dangerous illusions. Jesus says: "You need to be born again." (John 3, 7)

God is holy and righteous, his perfection does not allow him to exercise his mercy to the detriment of his righteousness. He is slow to anger but he will not consider the guilty as innocent.

God can only offer the guilty his forgiveness, his peace and eternal life because of the atonement which his Son Jesus Christ fulfilled. Only the blood of Jesus can purify sin. God does not claim anything else from us as to believe it. From then on our lives will be changed.
