27th March

I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the Lord. Psalm 104, 33 & 34

Haendel's last moments

In Westminster Abbey in London the visitor's look is attracted by a nice statue representing the big composer Haendel. The master is in front of his organ and in his hands he has a music sheet with following words: "I know that my Redeemer lives." (Job 19, 25)

It is said that the famous musician listened to somebody reading Psalm 91 before he died: "I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and fortress, my God in whom I trust. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day." (verses 2 & 5) God says to them who honour him with such a confidence: "Because he loves me says the Lord, I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name." (verse 14)

Haendel also asked for the reading of 1st Corinthians 15. He interrupted the reader a few times to tell him: "Stop a moment and read the verse again."

Haendel's last words were: "Lord Jesus receive my spirit. Let me die and resurrect with you."

Such a peaceful end of life is not an exception: it can be experienced by all who give their destiny to Jesus who declared: "I am the way, the truth and the life; no-one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14, 6)
