23rd June But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. Philippians 3, 7 Has she really lost everything? In a train compartment some travellers were discussing about how to change the world. We should do this or that. A small, old and wrinkled woman was sitting beside them. She simply listened to them with interest. One of the travellers turned himself towards her and asked: "Lady, what do you think about the world?" She answered with a foreign accent: "You know, I have lost everything. Earlier, in my own country I was rich and surrounded by those whom I loved. The civil war swept everything. For years I have been alone in a foreign country. I did housework to live decently. I do not regret anything. In my loneliness I met God. I now know Jesus. At the time of my wealth I never really was happy nor satisfied. Jesus has given me happiness." |

The calamity should therefore not kill hope. Lasting happiness is not in the earthly goods neither in human affection which are important. It is in Jesus. He gives us peace, contentment, joy and comfort. The origin of this is everlasting life.
