a dove: represents the Holy Spirit to have contact with heaven

20th July

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to the nations. It pleased the Lord for the sake of his righteousness to make his law great and glorious. Isaiah 42, 1 & 21

People were overwhelmed with amazement. "He has done everything well," they said. "He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. Mark 7, 37

Contact with heaven

When the Lord comes back from Galilee he walks through the region of the Decapolis where he had delivered a demon possessed person of Gadara before. The testimony of this deliverance has brought forth fruit, because now instead of asking Jesus to leave the Gadarenians bring him a deaf and mute man and they ask him to heal him. However, the Master does not want this healing to become a spectacle; he also takes away the ill person from the crowd. He looks up to heaven and sighs before commanding: "Be opened!"

The look of Jesus up to heaven and his sigh emphasize on the contrast: because man has lost contact with heaven he has become deaf to God's voice and his mouth cannot pronounce anything good to God. However, Jesus came to restore this broken relationship between God and us to allow us to praise him who "does everything well."

The remark of the amazed crowd sums up the whole life of Jesus. However, the popular estimate is not important for him, but it is God's estimate. He never looked for popularity, because he knew that the crowd is changeable. The Lord Jesus is an example for the believers who should look for God's estimate and not the popular estimate. When the time comes the Lord will tell the servant how he estimates the service done: "Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things." (Matthew 25, 21)
