The dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12, 7

You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, O sons of men." Psalm 90, 3

What happens after death?

"Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment" (Hebrews 9, 27). Nobody contests this affirmation of the Bible. In every village there is a cemetery which reminds us of this fate. The process of growing old and dying of human being begins at his birth. What is the end of it? Maybe we prefer not to ask to many questions. We should acknowledge that this is not a logical attitude. None of us would go into a train without knowing where it will lead to. This attitude is not brave. One prefers to "bury one's head in the sand."

This irresponsible behaviour of many people hides an unacknowledged anguish. The end of the verse explains this attitude: "After death man has to face judgment." Judgment is a hard word and it is inevitable. Everything is not finished when the grave is closed. "The body returns to earth and the spirit returns to God who gave it" (Ecclesiastes 12,7).

This present life is a short period in the everlasting history of our soul. Our life is full of heavy consequences. Our life is tested. It is not a question of how we have used our freedom, our time, our health, our abilities. It is a question of which place Jesus as our Saviour and Lord had in our lives. One day we will have to answer these questions.
