27th November The Lord says: "Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. Jeremiah 18, 6 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2, 10 The potter and his vase Let us have a look at the work of a potter for a moment. First of all he takes clay and kneads it. Then he puts it onto the wheel and forms it. One hand is inside and the other one outside. One hand hollows and gives it the desired form while the other hand which is outside smooths, refines and curves it. So the potter with his know-how can make a vase from an inert mass. God is the potter and we are the clay in his hand (Jeremiah 18, 6). He forms us according to his thoughts and his wisdom. "The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (Genesis 2, 7). However, sin has spoiled everything. This messed up vase becomes unusable. Then the potter makes another vase (Jeremiah 18, 4). |
The believer is a new vase. He has a new life in the hands of God. This hand of God forms and fathoms the soul. The hand of God allows us to have rich experiences but also trials, mournings, illness and all kinds of difficulties. These experiences are here to form us according to the perfect model of Jesus Christ.
The apostle Paul knew this double pressure. He is called a "chosen instrument" (Acts 9, 15). Although he went through moral and physical sufferings he was an imitator of Christ. For God made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us (2 Corinthians 4, 6 - 7).
