The Lord says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your ennemies a footstool for your feet. Psalm 110, 1

Quicksands

How could David have described this image which goes through Psalm 69 from one end to the other without being inspired by the Holy Spirit: the image of quicksands which inexorably swallow up the unhappy who is found there when the tide is coming in? It is impossible for him to get out of such a situation: the ground slips away under his feet.

This picture certainly describes David's feelings when he is devoided from human help. However, for us Christians, this description makes us catch a glimpse of Jesus fear at the end of his life and especially on the cross.

What an agony in the garden of Gethsemane before he faces the dramatic day during which everybody's hatred will be expressed. He is led from law court to law court by the religious chiefs, the crowd, the Romans and the Jews!

There is nobody who can help this innocent man who only did good and there is nobody who can counsel him. And when he is on the cross men's evilness continues to be translated by mockings and insultings until darkness covers the scene. God's anger against sin breaks out on Jesus who is left by his God during three hours of atonement. However, he will get out of his tomb as a winner, he is risen by the Father's glory who entirely is satisfied, and who will make him sit at his right hand.
