But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. Matthew 7, 26

Blockhouses

In German "blockhaus" means "a house which forms a block". Once it was a small military defensive work which was supported by wooden beams and by logs or even concrete. The French know this word because a lot of blockhouses were built on the beaches of the Atlantic Coast during the last war.

Intended to hinder a military landing they were solid and impressive. Fifty years later, they are often invaded by sand and have toppled over lamentably.

The blockhouses were mighty but their foundation was made from sand. The architects know that one can build on sand under condition that there is no ravine of water. This is what the Gospel says: the house on sand is only good as long as there is no storm (Matthew 7, 26 & 27).

We can have a nice appearance as long as everything goes well. However, it is the test which is the proof. The test reveals our foundation of life: sand or rock? Sand is all the opinions of the day or of the past, all human references. However, the rock is the teaching of Jesus who was sent by the God of eternity.

Do we want our life to be spiritually solid? Let us trust in Jesus Christ. Then we can go forward with assurance and humility on the way of life.
