an anchor

6th November

For no-one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3, 11

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6, 19

Which anchor?

The boat which leads the apostle Paul to Rome is heavy loaded. In addition to the cargo it transports 276 people. It left Crete and is on it's way to a sheltered harbour. Suddenly a terrible storm comes up and the boat strikes the rocks. The marine is crippled. After having lightened the boat they throwed four anchors into the sea (Acts 27, 29 & 40).

What is the foundation of our life? Have we examined it's solidity?

A fisher of Normandie was used to mooring his boat to a big chain in the harbour. However, when the workers continued their work, they discovered that this chain Mais à la suite de travaux, des ouvriers découvrirent que cette chaîne était elle-même reliée à une bombe non désamorcée de la dernière guerre !

Sometimes we can build our future on our good health our on a bank account which is well stocked. Everything can topple over from one day to the next. We trust in our mental abilities which are weak. When Solomon the wisest king of the earth was at the top of his power, glory and wealth he cried: "Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!" (Ecclesiastes 1, 2)

What should be the foundation of our life so that we are not disappointed? Our assurance is in God. "We knew and believed the love he had for us", the love of God who "sent his only Son into the world so that we can live through him" (1 John 4, 9 & 16).
