14th January Questions Where are you? What did you do? God asks Adam these questions after Adam had disobeyed him (Genesis 3, 9 & 13). The answer is typical for somebody with a bad conscience. I hid myself because I have sinned against you. God asks Hagar, who fled to Sara, the wife of Abraham: "Where do you come from and where are you going" (Genesis 16, 8). Just like this young woman everybody who turns away from God is in a hopeless situation and God knows this. Jesus asked two men who followed him: "What are you looking for?" (John 1.38). And they, who made a point of remaining with him, answered: "Where do you stay?" Jesus asked the disciples: "Who do you say that I am?" Peter, one of them answered: " You are Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16.15-16). Our eternal destiny depends on our answer and our estimation of Jesus Christ in our earthly life. If we think that he is only one prophet among others, why then choose him and listen to him rather than all other intellectual guides? If he really is the Son of God and he is, we do not have the choice, because he who believes in the Son has eternal life, but the anger of God remains on him who does not believe (John 3, 36). Jesus asked Bartimaeus: "What do you want me to do for you?" (Mark 10, 51) He screams: "I want to see again". Jesus heals him. Today we can pray the following prayer: "Open my eyes so that I can see you, Lord, and walk in your light." |
