qu'est-ce que l'homme

29th March

On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "woman you are set free from your infirmity." Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God. Luke 13, 10 - 13

Let us raise our head

Since eighteen years this woman was bent. What could she see? She could not see anything else than her feet and the earth she walked on. It was impossible for her to lift up her eyes towards the sky!

This narrative as well as all the others in the gospel has a symbolic meaning. Through experience we know that certain burdens are heavy to carry. It is normal that a person who has a heavy rucksack on his back is bent forwards to keep the balance. My dear friend maybe it is impossible for you to get detached from your earthly concerns. You may even by crushed by them. What are your thoughts occupied with? Do you think about your personal problems, your worries about your job, your family? God invites you to lay them down in front of him and to raise up your head.

This woman was bent for eighteen years. However, Jesus sees her and calls her. Note that it is not mentioned that she stands up because she could not stand up on her own but she was straightened up. After being straightened up she can see a horizon of life: she sees Jesus and she sees her own surroundings, she sees the sky. This is what brings her to glorify God.

Let the Lord Jesus touch your heart. If you receive him as your personal saviour through faith your life will be completely changed. Problems on earth will be less important and Jesus Christ will fill your look.
