22nd April Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and love your neighbour as yourself. Luke 10, 27 Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15, 13 The Good Samaritan Read Luke 10, 30 - 37 Let us read this wonderful parable again. The unhappy traveller whose clothes are stripped off and who is left half-dead represents man who is fallen into Satan's hands. The priest and the Levite who pass by on their way represent the vain help of religion. However, in the loving Samaritan we recognize the Saviour who bent over man's misery to snatch him away from his hopeless spell. |
Dear friend, Jesus is passing near by you at this moment. He holds out his hand towards you. He wants to heal your moral injuries. He came from heaven to offer his life as a sacrifice for you and me.
If you think that the essential is to love your neighbour as yourself you must acknowledge that you don't do it and that you cannot do it by yourself. Note that Jesus asks his negotiator this question: "Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" Jesus came to earth to be our neighbour. What an extraordinary humiliation!
Acknowledge him as he who made himself your neighbour and who loved you so much to offer himself as a sacrifice for your sins.
Then as his example by love you will become the neighbour of all men and you will be able to do what he says: "Go and do likewise."
