This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 1 John 4, 9 & 10

God's love

There is so much selfishness in man's heart so that God's love is less understandable than his holiness. Jesus never did anything for himself and because of this nobody understood him.

Even if human nature can have some sympathetic aspects the Bible never tells us that we are worthy to be loved. We cannot do anything to become worthy of love. On the contrary, the Bible declares that in God's eyes we are hated and we hate one another (Titus 3, 3). We are hated but we need to be loved, this is the contradiction of our nature. God only can solve this problem. How? By first loving men and loving them as they are.
