Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Isaiah 49, 15 & 16

Who was the most human person

Two news items: a vagabond finds a new-born child, a little girl in a plastic bag among a rubbish heap. She is abandoned at a frosty temperature.

A woman walks towards a phone box; she hears the wailing of a new-born baby. It is a few hours old boy who was placed there.

I cannot refrain from comparing these two events with one of my small experiences. When I was unpacking the wood I fell onto a rat nest. In this nest there were the mother and three small rats. As soon as the mother sees me she escapes hastily. However, great surprise, she immediately comes back to her nest and in spite of the danger of my presence she takes away one of her little ones to put it in a sure place. Two more times she does the same trick until she will have saved all her offspring.

I admire this motherly instinct and I say to myself: Who was the most human person? Besides, the Bible denounces men's behaviour of our aera. "There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good" (2 Timothy 3, 1 - 3). "They are filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless and ruthless" (Romans 1, 29 - 31).

However, God gave his Son and Jesus let himself be nailed on a cross for such persons. In his hands and his feet he has the ineffaceable scars of his love.
