The greatness of the Gospel
Let us read the Gospel in a simple way but with all our attention; the Gospel has a character of truth which we feel more than we prove it. The apostles speak about it with conviction;
they are neither visionaries nor mystics. They simply explain what they have seen and heard, what their hands have touched; they testify to their contemporaries, they speak about the most wonderful events without pomposity nor embellishment, and they don't hide their own weaknesses. They write at different times and in different places and they are in agreement with the same facts. Their different ways of writing and their varieties do not weaken their testimony but confirm it. Although they are far away from each other, they always speak the same language without contradicting each other; they preach everywhere with an assurance that only the truth can give them. What they say they maintain it in front of the magistrates, in prison, when they are threatened by whips or worse. Sometimes they pay for it with their blood. Even if they are illiterate, they confuse the wise with an unknown and sublime doctrine. This doctrine has nothing to do with all the ideas already received.
These sent people are not impostors. The Gospel has a godly seal which cannot be imitated. In order to perceive it's truth and the futility of objections we only need to read the Gospel by looking for God with genuineness!
