a comet

7th April

Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years. Genesis 1, 14

The century's comet

April 1997. The event is the super comet Hale-Bopp which is visible to the naked eye every evening and it is known as the nicest one of the century. Those who discovered it in July 1995 calculated it's trajectory because the stars obey to very precise laws. The astronomers interpret these stars into clever calculations. The regularity of their movements is one of the biggest wonders of creation. When the heavenly bodies travel through their orbits they testify of God's power and faithfulness. God continually maintains favourable conditions for life on earth.

Even though man persists in rejecting his creator God never tires of challenging his creature by the most magnificent testimonies of his greatness and wisdom. "For this is what the Lord says - he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited - he says: "I am the Lord and there is no other." Declare what it is to be, present it - let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the Lord? And there is no God apart from me, a righteous God and a Saviour, there is none but me (Isaiah 45, 18 & 21).

When I see the vast army of shining stars in the sky which are sustained in their radiant orbits by your power I understand my smallness, my nothingness and your greatness, I feel all my weakness, O God, powerful Creator!
