Mary sits down at the feet of Jesus to listen to his word

11th April

"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10, 41 & 42

I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3, 14

Only one thing

This man continues: "I know only one thing. I was blind and now I see." We can have a happy certainty: we were lost and thanks to the sacrifice of Christ we are saved when we believe in him.

Martha was a very active person but her sister Mary knew at this moment that only one thing was important: to sit down at the feet of Jesus and to listen to his words (Luke 10, 38 - 42). Today this is still the "good part"!

The apostle Paul had a lot of titles and he could have made the most of them but because of Christ he looked at them as a loss. He was able to write to the Philippians: "I do only one thing: forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead." (Philippians 3, 13) Human values and advantages can become a loss for a Christian if he is attached to them.

In Psalm 27 David asks God for one thing. He seeks it. It is expensive for him. He says: "that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life." (v. 4) What a wonderful dwelling!

Our wonderful programme is to have the assurance of salvation, to listen to the Word of the Lord, to run towards the heavenly goal and to dwell in God's presence.
