Somebody understands me

A number of biblical people went through such a great depression that they wished to die.

Elijah, a tired prophet cried out: "I have had enough, Lord. Take my life ; I am no better than my ancestors" (1 Kings 19, 4). Immediately, God came and helped him. God brought him food to strengthen him. He gently spoke to his heart to encourage him.

Jonah, another prophet who had announced the punishment for a big town gets angry because God forgave the inhabitants who had asked God for forgiveness: "Jonah asked for death for his soul and said: It would be better for me to die than to live" (Jonah 4, 8). God takes time to explain Jonah the reason for his mercy: it is his goodness towards men and his compassion for his creatures, children and animals.

And Job, who is marked by grief and illness, wated for a death which did not come and complained: "I loathe my very life; therefore I will give free rein to my complaint and speak out in the bitterness of my soul. I will say to God: Do not condemn me but tell me what charges you have against me" (Job 10, 1 & 2). So God speaks to him about life, shows him his tenderness and his care for the least of his creatures. At the end Job can say: "He redeemed my soul from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light" (Job 33, 28).
